In the best tradition of Community Spirit!, United to help others!
We at the Trinity United Church do not stand alone, there are many
organisations and community minded people that help make this a reality.
What is the Bread and Roses Food Bank you ask?
Well here is a brief history.
Started in 1996 by Reverend Bea Arnill, the food bank has served over
11,000 people in its 11 year history.  It is regularly supported by local
individuals, churches, businesses, clubs, and service organisations and it
works in conjunction with various food banks in Sudbury and Valley East.
A small but dedicated crew from Trinity United Church operates the food
bank and observes the principles that were important at the origin of the
term "Bread and Roses."
"Bread and Roses" is a name originating from 1912 when in Lawrence,
Massachusetts, 20,000 workers walked out of the textile mills to protest a
cut in pay when the state law made 54 hours the maximum work week for
women and minors. As they picketed the plant, someone asked the women
what they wanted. Their answer has become a classic response for the
desires of all oppressed people, but in particular for marginalized women.
They answered, "We want bread but we want roses too!"
In another culture it might be rice and lilies or pita and orchids, but the
meaning would be the same. They wanted bread - a decent return for their
labours.  They wanted roses - recognition that they were human and needed
beauty and gentleness in their lives and the lives of their families.
These two images are also images for the one who came to bring hope to the
despairing world. In our journey of life, as we struggle with the injustices of
our world, we need bread for our inner journey. We need the bread of life as
it comes to us in the person of Jesus to deepen our understanding and touch
our lives with hope. But we need roses too, to symbolize the best in our lives.
We need roses to remind us of the inner beauty of the man who was teacher
and friend to the oppressed and the outcast. We need roses to perfume our
lives with hope for justice and peace, roses to fill our souls with the fragrance
of love and mercy.
